online tutoring business support for tutors

Uneize

Anyone interested in starting an Online Tutoring venture ? I would like to partner with .....

Hello all,

I am Uneize, based in South-Asia and having my own online tutoring firm providing tuition for the UK professional accountancy students. This is the first of its kind one-on-one online live tutoring services for these UK professional accountancy qualifications.

As you may already know, the lessons are conducted online where the tutors and students can communicate with each other through voice chat. Also, a web-based smart-board is used for writing purposes where the student can instantly see what the tutor is writing in his screen, wherever the student is based in the world. We generally do not use a video (web-cam) as web-cams have become a negative weapon in internet. But, it is not impossible. The prime advantage in online tutoring from South-Asia is, a better quality (or at least the same quality) tuition available in the UK /West could be delivered from South-Asia at 1/5th of the cost in the UK/West, since the tutors are based in S-Asia and the living costs here are much cheaper compared to Europe and the US.

We have already coached a number of students so far and also steadily receiving word-of-mouth referrals too. However, being just online seems not sufficient to utilise our full capacity. In fact, from recently, I am considering to provide online tutoring for the UK (or any other region's) school market which is considerably a larger market compared to professional accountancy education.

My current requirement is, I would like to meet a person who can represent us in the UK or in other regions. Ideally, you may make contacts with one or two schools, with teachers who might refer students, contacts with parents and also spreading the message at local libraries etc. to generate a business. The representative's commission level etc. could be discussed via an online chat. This proposal, I think, ideally would suit to a person who has an education entrepreneurial spirit. Any one who is interested or any one here who have ideas on ways to find a good contact in the West, please be kind enough to e-mail me at: uneize AT gmail.com

Thank You for your time and Understanding !!!

Same as the above ...

when approaching accredited tuition centers, they, in the first pace think that we are an "evil" from Sri Lanka have come to the UK to capture their market by providing tuition at a fraction of the cost. So, many tuition centers do not wish to talk with us.

Also, as I am based in Sri Lanka, it is next to impossible to directly communicate with the person who would make decisions (a partner / the CEO etc), as all the communication works "virtually". And, even in such circumstances, the e-mail we sent might, most probably reach to a customer service executive or similar as the contacts of the top management are not displayed in their web site. Thus, such junior officials are highly unlikely to forward them to their seniors, as they are working on a routine 9-5.

It seems, either we should have "our own" marketing facility in the West which would cost much, or, we should have a firm, like you said, which could provide us with regular students. If we did not have both of these, and if we had online presence only, it is highly unlikely that we could make this a success, I think.

Isn't it .....?

No doubt this is a tough situation!

Maybe by having an online presence only, this would make more sense assuming you can land the jobs.

Were you actually considering setting up an office in UK and having face to face tutors? That would be a huge investment. At least with only an online presence, there would be a lot less to lose.

True, it would be a battle to land your jobs, but maybe it wasn't meant to be that way in the first place.

I still don't know the details about your tutoring company, but I can tell you that online tutoring and learning is the future.

Perhaps there are other companies or schools you can contact and try to land deals with. My old partners company would send a rep to each school in different parts of the US. Once they landed a contract, their company would offer those services to the school and it was all done online with software and 1 on 1 tutoring when needed. They had an office with all of their tutors located in that central location. They actually had it set up so a student could request live help if they got stuck on part of the online learning program.

Of course, you could have tutors work from different locations (home) too. That's what I did. All of the tutor I employed in the past worked directly from home and surprisingly, they could be counted on the same as if they were in an office.

Dear Scott,

Thank you for your reply and valuable thoughts.

Now, I have decided to do some off-line advertising. I contacted my friend in the UK and he agreed that he might be able to distribute flyers / handbills which he said, I should print here in Sri Lanka and send them to his address. I have requested him to leave these handbills at the desks of cashiers of book stores which sell GCSE books and CIMA, ACCA related books. I have an idea of printing around 2000 - 3000 handbills here and send them to him.

I will also design the handbill with my webmaster and as you said before, will up-load here for your review. Are there any way that I could send it to you, rather than making it available for everyone to see here by uploading ? I would like to send it for YOUR review.

Also, do you think, leaving handbills at book stores and fixing them at school bulletin boards is effective rather than hiring a professional distributing company to distribute handbills to house holds ?

I was about to give-up this before speaking / discussing through this forum with YOU, because, it is almost more than an year, but I had many problems and obstacles getting this venture work. Specially, I had no any affiliate or professional contact who could work/perform as the FRONT-END of the business, looking after the marketing side. But, after speaking with you, I gained much confidence and it is mainly the confidence is required to bravely make decisions I think. Also, I should thank my webmaster who encouraged me (he knows me from my school days) and even though he is based in a foreign country now, he contacted me on Skype and encouraged me telling, "You can do. If you can not do this, no-one in the world would do this !" .....

Thank you and expecting your reply !!!

I really would prefer if you show the flyer or handbill here. I highly doubt anyone is going to steal it and use it against you. The good news is that I can help you in a public forum so that others see what is working.

The world is a big place and I am sure there is a place for your tutoring service.

I'll be able to give you more advice once I see the size of your flyer.
