Online Tutoring

online tutoring business support for tutors

Hello, I've started teaching online via skype and Talkandwrite. When some technical problems occur, I don't know how to solve. For example sometimes my voice reaches my students a few seconds after I speak...do I or my students just need to have a faster connection? AlsoI want to share several pages of document with my students in my class, like a textbook. If someone knows any software which is better than Talkandwrite, please let me know! Thanks!

Hi,
As regards connection speeds: Yes, if there is a noticeable delay then there seems to be a problem with the connection speed. It might be the nominal speed, or it might just be one of those "bad days" (i.e. some extraordinary traffic pushes some intermediate router to its limit). Also, it might be that an automatic updater (be it on your computer or that of your student) is downloading lots and lots of data in the background, which might reduce the bandwidth that is left for your audio connection. To make sure that this does not happen you might want to disable automatic updates, perhaps only for the duration of a tutoring session. (The same applies to your student, of course.)

An important question is whether you experience this problem with all your students or only with some of them. If you experience it only with some of them, then you may assume that it is not primarily a problem with your internet connection (but possibly with the connection of those students). If you experience this problem with all your students, then it is likely to be a problem with your own internet connection (speed). You could try to test the speed of your internet connection using a suitable test, see http://www.speedtest.net/ for example.
Unfortunately, I cannot advise you as regards a whiteboard because I happen use a shared whiteboard that I have developed myself (and which is not available for commercial use).
Regards,
Christian

Most online classrooms have voice problems and I know for a fact that skype offers 0 help. Not sure about talk and write.

To collaborate with your students text book, I recommend using google docs. It's free and your student can just snap a picture of their text and upload it to google docs.

Hope that help!
